KMMS MMI mock interview

A KMMS MMI mock interview led by a KMMS medical student who sat the MMI and got in. Realistic timing, honest feedback after every station, and a clear plan for what to work on next.

Why KMMS needs its own practice

KMMS says its MMI is considerably different from most UK medical school interviews, and that some previous applicants found normal school or commercial MMI preparation unhelpful for the KMMS process.

So prepare for the KMMS format specifically: short stations that test how you think and communicate, plus a long group station where you are assessed as an individual.

How to approach each KMMS station type

KMMS has publicly listed these historical station types. Here is a simple approach for each.

Data handling

Read before you calculate

  • Check the title, axes and units first
  • Say the headline trend in one sentence
  • Do a quick sanity check on any sum
  • Name what the data cannot tell you
Problem analysis

Think out loud, in order

  • What do I know?
  • What is the actual problem?
  • What information is missing?
  • Options, trade-offs, then a decision and next step
Situational judgement

Safety, role, honesty

  • Is anyone at risk right now?
  • What is my role, and what is beyond it?
  • Talk to the person first, then escalate if needed
  • Say how you would follow up
Role play

Communicate, do not act

  • Open with your name and purpose
  • Ask open questions and listen
  • Explore their ideas, concerns and expectations
  • Summarise and agree the next step
Task

Clarify, then commit

  • Repeat the instructions back in your own words
  • Talk through your thinking as you work
  • Check understanding if you are giving instructions
  • Stay calm and adapt if something goes wrong
Values-based

Show the behaviour

  • Know the six NHS values
  • Have a real example for each
  • Use situation, action, result, reflection
  • Spend most of the time on what you learnt

Worth knowing

The qualities KMMS lists echo the NHS values.

  • KMMS looks for resilience, realistic commitment to Medicine, compassion, quality of care, communication, teamwork, dignity, respect, understanding other viewpoints, responsibility, and academic ability and potential.
  • The NHS Constitution’s six values are working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts.
  • So prepare one real example for each NHS value. Most KMMS qualities will then be covered by stories you already know well.

Building up to your KMMS MMI

  1. Now

    Build the raw material

    • Keep volunteering or working with people
    • Write a short note after each shift: what you noticed, what you learnt
    • Read one health story a week
  2. After applying

    Learn the format

    • Read the KMMS guide and its station types
    • Prepare examples for the six NHS values
    • Practise explaining your reasoning out loud
  3. Invite arrives

    Timed practice

    • Book your interview slot through KentVision
    • Do 7-minute stations with feedback
    • Practise a group task with three or four others
  4. Final week

    Sharpen and rest

    • One full mock circuit
    • Work only on your weakest station type
    • Sleep, plan your journey and reset routine
